Rosenstaub translates to rose-dust and is all about a fresh, delicate femininity that has been appreciated for millennia. Rose essence has been used for thousands of years as the quintessential feminine scent and the rose itself has been a symbol of femininity for the same length of time. We wanted to try and create something understated; something feminine without being fussy or ‘girly‘.

Neoprene, a key material in most of our products, is best known as the material used to make wetsuits for surfing or diving. It was originally developed by DuPont™ in 1931 as a substitute for rubber. Its physical toughness, water resistance, flexibility, and usability over a wide range of temperatures make neoprene ideal for a variety of applications and products. This very durable material, the soft, sculptural fabric once relegated exclusively to wetsuits has well and truly infiltrated both our swimwear and ready-to-wear closets alike. There are different types of foam available for the fashion industry, all of which are referred to as Neoprene. We use the highest quality SBR and CR foam for our handbags.

Rosenstaub bags are water-resistant, but not completely waterproof, unless so stated in the features of a specific item. This means they can withstand and repel limited exposure to water for short periods of time. For instance, if you get caught in the rain, don’t worry - you’re safe. As for diving into a pool with your laptop? We wouldn’t recommend it.

Product care

Since our neoprene bags also feature leather elements such as carrying handles and zipper-pullers, we strongly recommend you do not machine wash our products. The interior is a water-resistant canvas and can easily be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The exterior can be spot treated with some mild soap and a cloth and leaving them out to drip dry.

Now that this traditional aquatic fabric has transitioned from the beach to the street, it’s important to note just how to clean it with the care it requires. While you can purchase a cleaner specifically for neoprene, they're usually expensive and don't actually have much of an edge over cheaper, more common solutions in terms of cleaning power. A mild detergent will often work just fine on neoprene fabric. You can also use a mild shampoo like baby shampoos and let it air dry and avoid exposure to direct sunlight as UV rays can cause your neoprene to break down faster.

Neoprene is extremely durable as well as soft. Neoprene items may temporarily lose their shape when stored incorrectly or pressed against irregular surfaces. We therefore recommended that your bag be kept in the dustbag we provide with every purchase in our online shop. In the event pressure marks are noted, leaving the bag on a smooth and flat surface overnight will usually correct the deformation. Your neoprene bag should ideally be kept in their dustbag in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. If you’re extra careful, you stuff them with tissue to maintain their shapes when not in use. Handbag maintenance requires more attention to detail than regular clothing, for better or for worse.
